Talking about the difference between the characters Robyn and Robert McCall, Queen Latifah said, “In Denzel’s version and the original version, those characters were much more stoic, more closed off. Robyn struggles in dealing with her past and is haunted by the guilt over the people she couldn’t protect during her early days. Robyn, on the other hand, isn’t reluctant to avail the support of other characters. Denzel Washington and Edward Woodward’s characters are about men shrouded in mystery, who were self-sufficient in their own right. Executive producer Debra Martin Chase stated that Queen Latifah is the fourth African-American female to lead a one-hour network drama after Teresa Graves, Kerry Washington, and Viola Davis. Lindheim and the showrunners wanted the lead role to be played by an African-American woman. Richard Lindheim was also a part of the developing team of the reboot. The series has been written by Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller, with Queen Latifah serving as an executive producer who plays Robyn’s character. Robyn, though, has a teenage daughter Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes), unlike the son of Robert McCall. Robert McCall is replaced by Robyn McCall, a lady who has the same credentials as the character she is inspired from. ![]() On the other hand, the television series reboot drifts away from the canonical form of the franchise. In the same year, ‘The Equalizer’ was adapted into a film of the same name starring Denzel Washington in the titular role. Like all other Hamster Arcade Archives releases, the emulator has plenty of options for screen filters, screen size, and more. It includes both the Japanese and US versions of the game, a one-credit hi-score challenge mode, and a “Caravan” mode where you score as many points as you can in five minutes. It matches the arcade experience perfectly, and I’d even give its emulation quality a slight edge over the more-expensive Code Mystics port. This newest port is just $8, and also the easiest to recommend. In 2018, the arcade-port-obsessed company Hamster released Metal Slug 3 as part of their Arcade Archives series. This version has a fun trophy list and solid online play, but I still feel like the price came in too high. It’s currently included as a free download through PlayStation Now, but if you don’t have Sony’s subscription service, then I can’t recommend paying $15 for the game especially when the cheaper version mentioned below exists. It has full online play as well, and if you still have a PS3 or Vita kicking around, buying the game once also gets you those versions. Indeed, it performs near-identically to the original arcade game, and it’s obviously running on a competent emulator. It has the right sound, the right pixel ratio, additional options and visual filters, and it’s free of load times or other strange performance issues. This 15 dollar standalone release was ported by Code Mystics, and it’s a fair bit better than the Anthology version. The second-best release of Metal Slug 3 was the first to launch on the PS4, back in 2015. Hilariously, the new intro movie made for this collection has loud, dynamic stereo audio, thus making the opening two minutes of Metal Slug Anthology sound better than any of your following time with the game. Metal Slug 4, 5, and 6 all had mono music originally thanks to using digital PCM music instead of FM synthesis, so their mono sound here is at least a more accurate representation. The mixing for general sound effects is also in mono, robbing the games of much of their dynamism. However, in the Anthology those games use terrible mono rips of the original songs. Metal Slug 1, 2, X, and 3 all had breathtaking stereo mixes for the music, running in real-time off the Neo Geo’s built-in FM synthesis hardware. Sound is as much of a mess as the visuals. ![]() Also, the artwork doesn’t use the right aspect ratio for the pixels, giving everything a slightly-too-tall look. The processing of controller input is also all wrong, lending a laggy feeling to play that compounds the issue of the increased visual speed. ![]() Indeed, the higher speed of several sections makes this Anthology harder to defeat than the originals. The frame rates of the conversions in Anthology often hold up better than the arcade originals, though purists would argue that not maintaining the original slowdown means the games aren’t properly preserved. ![]() It comes close to matching the splendor of the original games…on the surface. However, now that I’m equipped with more knowledge about the way the Neo Geo worked, and the way the arcade originals should play, I can see this collection for what it is: a haphazard port that’s not running the original code at all. This 20 dollar package includes nearly every major entry in the franchise, and when it first released on the PS2 and Wii in 2006, I thought it was a great emulation of the original arcade games. In 2016, thanks to the PS2 classics program, the PS4 got a shiny new release of the Metal Slug Anthology. Here they are, ranked from worst to best. Perhaps more bizarrely, this same now-crusty arcade game from the year 2000 has been released on the PS4 three different times in three different unique conversions. I like Metal Slug 3 just fine, and I’ll admit I owned that Xbox disc at launch, but it’s shocking to see what passed for value 16 years ago. The notion of paying 40 dollars for a conversion of a single old arcade game on a disc seems rather absurd now, but in 2004 it was good enough for an astounding 76 average on Metacritic. Metal Slug 3 was perhaps the first entry in the series to gain significant notoriety in the US, thanks to a heavily-marketed premium-priced port that released on the original Xbox. ![]() It started out way back in 1996 on the powerful Neo Geo arcade hardware, before spawning numerous sequels and ports across different platforms all the way up to the three current machines. It shouldn't be considered a "styling" thing that a code formatter handles. Something like that is something the interpreter/compiler should optimize away. The programmer may have purposely wanted an if statement to be contained within the else statement for their own reasons (ex: easier to add logging for debug reasons even if the second if condition fails). The end result is the same, of course, but what the programmer actually wrote has been changed beyond stylistic properties. ^ Shipments figures based on certification alone. * Sales figures based on certification alone. Their entry then goes on to describe their choruses as "chant-worthy" and that the singles from this album "ravaged hearts and minds across the globe", ending with the statement that they "linger forever in the hearts of true music lovers". Only three years after the band split, they were described in a Guinness World Records publication as "spectacular" with the sound of "No Limit" being compared to "the sound giant dinosaurs might make stomping on cities". Retrospective reviews of this album and the band in general have been more favourable. Nonetheless, the band won the Best Dance Act award in Smash Hits that year as well as the World Music Award for Benelux. Toby Anstis stated in his review of "Faces" that he "thought the album sounded all the same". The AllMusic review stated that beyond "No Limit" and "Let the Beat Control Your Body", there was little to recommend this album. In the review of the single "Maximum Overdrive", the magazine reiterated that the band were, "not hard or imaginative and they have no credibility in dance circles." But isn't simplicity the hardest thing to achieve? Like a juke box this 16-track album is stuffed with potential singles, such as the extremely poppy The Power Age and Maximum Overdrive with a racing car breaking all speed limits." In Smash Hits, reviewer Mark Frith described the album as an "across the board techno splurge" and stated that this album contained clues as to why the band were unpopular in "elite dance circles". But European magazine Music & Media gave a positive review, writing, "Those for whom " techno" is a pet hate always say "just push the button and out rolls another techno tune." It's not that simple of course, although this Dutch male/female duo has the gift to make you believe they do their thing in only two minutes. ![]() Īs their British record company PWL were dissatisfied with Ray Slijngaard's raps, the British version of this album replaced most of the raps with instrumental parts.Ĭritical reception Professional ratings Review scoresĭespite its commercial success, at the time the album was panned by the critics, especially in the UK. The second single from the album, " Tribal Dance", was released in 1993, followed by this album soon afterwards.
